New Alabama Outdoor Adventure Guide!

Hello and Welcome to Alabama Rock Company’s Gold Rush Page! Want to learn how to find gold? Mine gold in Alabama or just pan it!

I grew up in Alabama and for most of my life I did not even know that Gold could be found here. For over 3,500 square miles and an area that stretches from Birmingham to Montgomery across the state into Ga all the way into the Virginia’s! The area is called the Alabama Gold belt! They have been gold mining in Alabama since the early 1800's.

The first Gold found in the United Stated was found in North Carolina on the Reed Farm 1799. In 2006 the US produced 8.360 million ounces of gold and the largest producing state is Nevada.

It is believed that 1830 is when Gold was found in Alabama near Chestnut and Blue Creek in Chilton County. The Arbacoochee district produced the most lode and placer gold and in 1836 was the boom year and most was found in the Hillabee and Hog Mountain Mine. The town of Arbacoochee had around 600 men working in the mine and a population of 5,000 by 1845.  Goldville had 14 stores and population of 3,000 people.

Mining gold in Alabama was big business back then and now the mines are just ghost towns lost in the Alabama hills. If you are lucky a few locals will point the way and you may find an empty creek with an old shed or two.

I was there recently and you would never know that there was ever an old town there! All I saw was a stream that was barley trickling and a lonely crossroads with an old building near a slow moving creek.  As I drove through the area and saw all the houses I wondered if these were the descendents of the great Alabama Gold Rush.

Then out of the blue came the great California Gold Rush of 1849. As soon as word hit in Alabama many of the miners and their families took off on the long adventure to Cali.  The mother Lode had been found and almost all the Alabama mines had been abandoned. A few years later in 1853-54 Cornish miners came down from Tennessee to search for copper a made another small boom but later faded and there wasn't much interest.

Then in Cyanide was introduced in 1916 and another boom exploded and was quite again until the great depression. As soon as the depression hit many looked for other ways to make money and discovered that Gold could be a way to make money! It was at an all time at $35 ounce.  Now the price of gold is around $920 an ounce and is getting higher everyday. There will be a surge of people learning how to find gold!

There are 140 Gold Mines in Alabama and they can be found in Randolph, Tallapoosa, Cleburne, Chilton, Talladega, and clay counties. The Alabama Gold belt runs all the way into Georgia into North Carolina. There is still plenty of gold in Alabama creeks and every winter floods flush new gold out for the pickens.

People can be found panning, dredging, and metal detecting throughout these beautiful country streams. There are also a few places you can pay to play. Like Alabama Gold Camp. With such high gold prices you will for sure see more Gold Mining in Alabama!

I have been on several trips to various areas in Alabama and Georgia looking for Gold. If you are searching for a new adventure in your life that is fun and want to see some of the most beautiful sites ever. Order you a Gold pan and a gold map and find you the perfect stream. There is plenty of gold left to find. The experts say that we have only found 15 percent and the mother lode is still waiting.

How to pan Gold? Here's a list of tips that will help you help you get started!

  1. Buy the supplies you need! Gold Pan, 3 Screen sifter, Water Waders, backpack
  2. Carry plenty of water and lots of good natural Energy Food.
  3. Be prepared, cause Panning is hard and you will find muscles that you never knew you had! If you are traveling far, you may want to rent a room or camp!
  4. Be sure to get there early! The more light the easier it is to see.
  5. Study what Gold looks like and the different forms. There is a lot of fake Gold out there in the streams and it will fool you. Just remember real Gold will bend but not break! Hence the term malleable.
  6. Not in the lower area and near big rocks and near old fallen trees. Remember that gold is heavy and so it will wash to the deepest place.
  7. Look for black sand! The deeper you dig the more likely you will find some
  8. The deeper off the road the less likely people have looked! Sometimes a hiking trip might take you to some unmanned areas.
  9. Some really good places to go is in the National Forrest. You can get a permit to pan and some areas dredge. The Talladega National forest is a good area to go!
  10.  Most important, if you find the Mother Load, dig it and don't tell anyone! Or you may have 5,000 new friends!
