The Edmund Pettus Bridge

The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma , Alabama is the famous site of Bloody Sunday.  Civil rights demonstrators were attacked by armed officers while attempting to march to the state capital in Montgomery. March 7, 1965 was the date of the attack that would soon change American history and the civil rights movement.  The bridge was name after Edmund Winston Pettus who was a judge from Limestone County Alabama and  moved to Selma to practice law.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge was built in 1940 and is  1,248.1 ft long and crosses the Alabama River.  U.S. Route 80 in Alabama passes over the bridge and is a main route between Selma and Montgomery , Alabama.
